Google’s cloud offers at least as much protection as local hosting, says staffer

Post’s business enabling manager, Tracy Voice, echoed the view of several participants in a recent NZ Computer Society discussion on legal dangers of cloud computing – that privacy and security breaches are probably just as likely to happen on a local network or through physical loss of digital or non-digital media.
“We did a privacy impact assessment (PIA) with our legal people involved,” she says.

NZ Post trials open source on desktops

Just weeks after one of its divisions opted to replace Microsoft software with Google Apps, NZ Post is preparing to expand a proof-of-concept trial of open source on the desktop.

The project is about freedom and diversity in the choice of operating systems, not about specifically moving towards an open-source desktop, says NZ Post’s technology innovation manager, Barry Polley.

New Zealand Post is venturing into the clouds with a three-year Google email and messaging service contract that it says will save it $2 million.

From September, 2100 staff in the state-owned enterprise’s postal services group will begin using email and video and instant messaging services in a $1 million “cloud computing” deal.
